Lempuyang Temple is located on the top of Bisbis Hill or Mount Lempuyang, Karangasem. this temple is the oldest approved in Bali. some were thought to have existed in pre-Hindu-Buddhist times, which were originally sacred buildings made of stone. Lempuyang Temple is a place for Hyang Gni Jaya or Dewa Iswara.

In the book published by the Bali culture service (1998) entitled “Lempuyang Luhur” mentioned, lempuyang comes from the word “lamp” which means light and “hyang” to refer to God, like Hyang Widhi. from the word lempuyang or lamp which is interpreted by the holy light of God that is bright.

There is also another version which mentions lempuyang is a type of plant used for cooking spices. it is also related to the name of the banjar around Lempuyang, namely Bajar Bangle and Gamongan. Bangle and Gamongan are similar plants that can be used by drugs and herbs. there are also other versions that mention lempuyang derived from the words ’empu’ or ’emong’ which are interpreted as keeping. Bhatara Hyang Pasupati sent his three sons down to nurture in order to maintain Bali’s stability from various natural disaster shocks.

In lontar Kutara Kanda Dewa Purana Bangsul stated; Sang Hyang Parameswara carries mountains in Bali from Jambhudwipa (India), from Mount Mahameru. the piece of Mount Mahameru was brought to Bali and divided into three major parts and also small parts. the center is made of Mount Batur and Rinjani, while the peak is Mount Agung. The smaller fragments are the rows of mountains in Bali that are related to each other. these mountains are Mount Tapsahi, Pengelengan, Siladnyana, Beratan, Batukaru, Nagaloka, Pulaki, Sangkur Peak, Rangda Hill, Trate Bang, Padang Dawa, Andhakasa, Uluwatu, Sraya, and Mt. lempuyang. The mountains are the location of God’s manifestation Gods to guard Bali.
